Alright friends, let’s talk about the hardest people to buy for: PARENTS AND IN-LAWS! This is by far my most requested gift guide topic and I really hope this post helps you out! (Fingers crossed!!)
Instead of giving ideas for each individual, I thought it would be more helpful to focus on the couple. It can be fun to find a gift that they’ll both enjoy individually, but sometimes it’s helpful to gather the siblings together to get them both one thing they’ll really love, instead of a bunch of gifts they have no interest in from each of us. And when it comes to in-laws, I think that approach also takes the pressure off of you a little bit. Phew!
If you (or your significant other) really would rather get something for each of them, I’d check out my Gift Guides For Her and For Him because there are a ton of options in there. But for this post, I tried to find options that work whether you’re celebrating Christmas with your boyfriend for this first time and you just want to bring something as a gesture, or you’ve been spending the holidays with your in-laws for years! A lot of these also work for Grandparents (Hello photo gifts!), Aunts & Uncles, and other couples in your life, too. Let’s dive in!
2019 Gift Guide For Parents, In-Laws, and other couples
1. A Photo Book
Parents are suckers for family photos, so compile all of the pictures from your last family trip or dig up some photos from when you guys were little for a book! Alternatively, if you can’t find enough photos for a whole book, pick out 12 and make a calendar for 2020!
Also, this isn’t a physical present – but if you haven’t taken family photos in a while, gifting your parents a session with a photographer is an AMAZING gift. (FYI – this is also really nice for your siblings/friends who have kids, too!)
2. Gift Box
I put a Williams-Sonoma Peppermint Bark Gift Box in the collage because it’s a classic, but I also love Foxtrot’s Gift Bundles because they’re customizable! This Old Fashioned Box and The World’s Best Wine Regions Box are awesome options – but you can also make your own bundle with candles, chocolates, a cookbook, or even a vinyl record. Also, you can use the code LAKESHORLADY to get $5 off your next 3 delivery orders!
3. Monogrammed Cutting Board
Maybe double check to make sure they don’t have it already, but a monogrammed cutting board is a classic parent gift. Thoughtful, pretty, and useful!
4. House Portrait
I’m pretty sure I put this house portrait in one of my gift guides last year – but I’m including it here again because I think it’s so cute! Maybe your in-laws brought you to their lake house last summer and it was a great bonding experience. Wouldn’t it be so thoughtful to give them a portrait of that happy place? And if you’re shopping for your own parents, have this done for your childhood home, or even their first home together before you even came along. The sweetest!
5. Serving Platter
If your in-laws invite you over for Christmas Eve or Christmas every year, I love the idea of gifting them a festive platter that they can use when they host! This oval platter and this circle platter with trees on them are my favorite options this year. I own 2 platters by the same brand and they’re gorgeous. Each one of their pieces is hand painted in Tuscany on glossy Italian stoneware, so it feels really special. (Also, if you order through Vietri’s website and use the code LAKESHORE20, you’ll get 20% off!) If those items are a little too pricey for you, how adorable is this cheese platter?!
6. Herb Planter
This herb planter is definitely a specific gift, but if your boyfriend’s parent’s love to cook – this is such a unique and thoughtful gift!
7. Fancy soap
Fancy soap might sound ridiculous, but trust me here. This “Winter Forest” scent is delightful and this is a great affordable option for your favorite Aunt and Uncle or your boyfriend’s parents when he told you not to get them anything, but you feel like you should show up with something.
8. Philips Hue 2-Pack Premium Smart Light Starter Kit
I had no idea these smart lights existed until my sister-in-law told me about them, and now I’m fascinated! Basically, these light bulbs allow you to control you lights through an app from anywhere. You can set timers if you’re going out of town, or utilize certain settings like mimicking sunrise in the morning at the time you wake up, or mimic sunset around when you want to go to bed. They also have default settings like energize, reading, super bight, etc. that make the lights warmer or cooler. You can also pick any color you want, too! How cool is that?! I added them to our registry so I’ll keep you updated if someone gets them for us 😉
9. Charger Pad
Are your in-laws always losing their phone chargers? Get them a charging pad! This one is cute enough to keep on the counter in their kitchen or family room at all times, so they always know where to find it!
My mom recently discovered Illume diffusers and they smell incredible. Candles will always be a lovely gift (love this brand!), but I love that you never have to worry about diffusers burning your house down 😂
11. Espresso Machine
I kind of wish I thought of an espresso machine for my own parents before I got them their individual gifts because they were just talking about how it would have been nice to have an espresso after Thanksgiving dinner! It’s one of those things that they probably wouldn’t buy for themselves (or even ask for), but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t use and enjoy it! This one is still on MAJOR sale – such a great deal!
12. Nespresso Aeroccino
Why yes, this is the frother I wont shut up about! If your parents and/or in-laws love a good latte – this is the BEST gift. Just press a button to get cold froth, warm milk, airy foam or dense foam. Couldn’t be easier!
13. Tea Kettle
I’ve always admired my Mom’s pretty red tea kettle on her stove, and now we have a blue one on ours (thank you to Claire and Annie for getting it off our registry!)! It seems so simple, but if your parents or in-laws have had the same tea kettle since the year they got married, maybe they could use a pretty new upgrade that makes them smile every time they pass their stove or make a cup of tea!
14. Packing Cubes
Are they world travelers now that their kids are all grown up? Or are they getting ready for a big trip that they can’t stop talking about? Packing cubes is such a fun and unexpected gift to help them pack for their adventures!
15. Record Player and Records
Remember how I mentioned gathering the siblings for a group gift? A record player is perfect for that! Nordstrom has a bunch at different price points, but this one was highlighted as one of the best options in that price range. Get all of your siblings to chip in, find a few fun records to add, and they’ll be so excited!
16. Grill Pan
If they love grilling, but live somewhere cold like Chicago – get them a grill pan! They can make their favorite grilled veggies or burgers or steaks all winter long!
This is another group gift idea since it’s a little pricey, but my parents are obsessed with their Hypervolt. If your parents/in-laws are really active or could use help with stiff muscles, circulation and blood flow, this could be really useful for them!
18. Throw Blanket
I always like encouraging spending time together, so maybe look into a Blackhawks game, tickets to Hamilton before it closes, or even an upcoming concert. If you’re looking for something less expensive than that, I also recently discovered this book about The Crown that talks about what is real from the show and what has been dramatized for TV. Super interesting if your parents/in-laws love that show + history! And of course, if none of these fit the bill, I’d always encourage you to make a donation in their name.
