Apple Crumble Pie
This post is fun for a few reasons. #1 Thanksgiving is next week and this apple crumble pie would be perfect for the occasion. And #2, I have a feature in Midwest Living Magazine that is available now! Wooo!
You might remember me mentioning this a few months ago, but Midwest Living hosted a Holiday Recipe Contest and asked me to judge it! We got a ton of amazing submissions and I got to pick the best one in 6 different categories. It was then my job to create and shoot each one for the magazine. Their test kitchen and I made sure the recipes were good to go… and now I’ve decided to share a few of my favorites here on the site! So fun, right?!
If you can’t get your hand on the magazine, you can view the feature online right here. I’ll also give you a little peek of the real thing on insta-stories today!
This particular apple crumble pie recipe was submitted by Kristen H. She did such an amazing job – I brought it to a family gathering right after I baked it and let’s just say it didn’t last long ? So good!
Do you like traditional apple pie or apple crumble pie?
Ingredients
- 1 refrigerated unbaked pie crust
- 1/2 cup all-purpose-flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 6 tbsp ground oats or oat flour*
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 6 tbsp butter, softened
- 7 cups peeled and sliced Michigan Apples (about 7 medium apples)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground allspice
- *to make oat flour, place 6 tbsp of regular rolled oats into a food processor or blender. Cover and process until oats are finely ground.
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a 9-inch pie plate with the crust, carefully pressing it into the sides and bottom of the dish. Crimp the edges as desired. Set aside.
- In a medium bowl, stir together 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, oats (or oat flour), vanilla and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Using a fork or your fingertips, mix the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine apples, 1/2 cup tbsp granulated sugar, brown sugar, 2 tbsp flour, 1 tsp cinnamon and the allspice. Transfer apple filling to the pastry lined pie late. Sprinkle the crumb mixture over the apple filling.
- Place a foil-lined baking sheet on the lower oven rack. To prevent over-browning, cover the edges of the pie with foil. Place the pie on the middle oven rack. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil. Bake for 35 more minutes, or until fruit is tender and topping is golden. Cool on a wire rack.
