Behind the Lens: Ali B. Photography
A lot of people ask me who takes photos for me, and I usually gush about how lucky I am to work with such a talented little lady. So, with the launch of her brand new photography website, I thought it was time to introduce her to all of you!
I’ve known Ali for a long time… because she’s been dating my little brother for 8 years now. Yup, you read that right! Needless to say, at this point she’s practically family. She’s not only sweet and talented, but she makes awkward photo shoots so much fun. Bloggers – you know what I’m talking about. My favorite collaborations with her include yesterday’s LBD in the Loop, Cove Floral, Cut It Out, Slit, Birthday Denim and so so so many more!
So, wanna meet her?!
L: Tell everyone a little bit about you.
A: I’m originally from the suburbs of Chicago and I now live in Lincoln Park. I recently graduated in the winter from Mizzou and now work as an interior designer in the loop designing hotels. On the weekends, I love to knit cozy chunky things, utilize the surfboard emoji, and whip up tasty meals with my boyfriend (but let’s be real, I mostly just stir). Oh, and I can’t get to Monday without devouring a little za.
L: When did you first become interested in photography?
A: My mom sparked my interest in photography – when I was growing up she always had a camera with her and was one of the first moms on the block to switch from a film to digital camera. In 8th grade, I asked for a small Canon point and shoot for my birthday and I’ve been interested ever since. Though I don’t have a formal education in photography (I actually thought about majoring in photojournalism, but decided on interior design instead), I had an opportunity to hone my skills a bit in design school, as well as during my study abroad experience.
L: What do you like most about it/what are your favorite things to photograph?
A: Landscape and travel photography initially captivated my interest, but people and portraits have been my favorite subjects of late. Capturing candid moments and emotions are unique each time and the most intriguing to me!
L: What camera/lenses do you use?
A: Body: The Canon SL1 – it’s the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR, which is why I’m obsessed with it! I knew I wouldn’t use my camera as often if it was heavy and bulky. Lenses: The 40mm F/2.8 pancake lens is great for street photography, and like the SL1, it’s the smallest lens Canon makes. I also use the 50mm F/1.8 for portraits, and I just purchased the 15-85mm F/3.5-5.6 which I can’t wait to play with! I can see a lot of wide angle Chicago skyline shoots in my future…
L: Who are your style icons?
A: Miroslava Duma for sure, because I can relate to her dark hair and petite physique! I also love Kerry Washington and Lupito Nyong’o – they always kill it on the red carpet. And Jacey Duprie!!
L: How would you describe your style?
A: I definitely value comfort and practicality while still being on trend and stylish. Since I don’t often splurge on my wardrobe, I frequently purchase items off eBay and on sale (thanks Chloe Conspiracy!). Lately I’ve been into structured tops and dresses. I also love classic black and white with a pop of color in a statement necklace. However, I’m really excited to transition into fall, so I can pull out my chunky knits and my favorite Vince Camuto boots!
L: What’s one thing in your closet you couldn’t live without?
A: Hands down, my J Brand Maria Jeans. I’m convinced they’re the most phenomenal jeans on the planet.
L: What are your favorite blogs?
A: A Beautiful Mess, Damsel in Dior, I Am Khatu, Lake Shore Lady (obvi), My Paradissi, Sequins and Stripes, The Cool Hunter, The Fox and She, and The View from 5 ft 2. I also frequently check Lonny Magazine and Rue Magazine!
Thanks so much, Ali! If only you liked fashion and were into reading blogs…
