Get around with Car2Go
*This post was sponsored by car2go, but (as always) all opinions are my own!
So today we’re going to talk about something that I NEVER talk about. Driving. People always laugh when I tell them I haven’t driven regularly in years, but once I explain it, it makes a lot of sense. So, here we go.
When I went to Syracuse University, I had no interest in driving all the way to upstate New York. So, I ditched the idea of having a car, flew back and forth, and got used to the bus system on campus. Then, I moved to New York City where literally NO ONE has a car. And I mean, no one. Even the Park Avenue family I babysat for never took their car out of their building’s garage because it was too much of a hassle. Fast forward to when I moved to Chicago… I was on a very tight budget and I’d survived without a car for the past 7 years. Why force it?! I’d occasionally borrow my Mom’s car if I had an audition in the suburbs, otherwise public transit, Ubers/Lyfts (and eventually Adam) helped me get around from Old Town just fine.
That being said, a few factors have slightly changed. First of all, moving requires a lot of errands. We’re pretty settled, but we’re still finding things we need to get or fix for the place. Also, grocery shopping for two is a whole different ballgame! Those bags fill up and get heavy FAST now… so having a car to help out is ideal. Plus, I’m 31, people. I’m going to have to get back in the driving game eventually, right?! ?
Enter Car2go
Luckily, car2go just launched in Chicago and it is a complete game changer. I know there are other carsharing services out there, but this one makes it easier than EVER before. Basically, you open up their app and find a car near you. You can choose between a little Smart ForTwo, or drive in style with a Mercedes-Benz CLA or Mercedes-Benz GLA. Locate the vehicle you want, reserve it, and unlock it all from your phone. Find the keys, start that bad boy, and do what you gotta do! The best part is when you’re done with the car though, because you don’t have to return it to the same spot! That’s right, you can drop it off anywhere within their approved “Home Area”. No need to refuel or anything. Seriously, SO convenient.
A few other great things about car2go, is that insurance, parking, and gas are all included in the price – and there is no surge pricing ever. Haven’t we all been stuck in the rain with tons of bags after just missing the bus, yet Uber/Lyft is surging like crazy?! Now you can just open up the car2go app, grab the nearest car, and drive yourself home. Whaaa?! I told you – game changer!
Or you want to head to the suburbs, but the train times don’t link up with your schedule? Reserve car2go for 6 hours or the whole day. Plus, you only pay those prices when you actually use the service, because car2go doesn’t have any monthly membership fees. Boom.
I especially appreciate services like this because having a car in a city is expensive. It’s so hard for me to justify spending the money on one when Adam has his… but sometimes it would be nice. Plus, having options while limiting the amount of cars on the road is always a good thing for the environment. I’m a public transit kind of gal. I really don’t mind it most of the time, and it may be a small contribution to being more eco-friendly – but every little bit counts, right?
