Caramelized Onion Twists
These Caramelized Onion Twists are the perfect appetizer for Christmas, New Year’s, or any other holiday!
Happy Monday before Christmas! When I was brainstorming appetizer recipes to make for you this year, I knew I wanted to have one super easy one (doesn’t get much easier than my Pesto Dip!) and one that was a little bit more involved. However, even though this recipe may take a little bit more time, it’s still really simple! I love that it utilizes a store bought product, plus it’s fun to make and makes your home smell SO GOOD.
If you like French Onion Soup, then you’ll definitely like these. The jammy caramelized onions and nutty gruyere cheese is such a nostalgic combination – and it’s even better when gently wrapped in puff pastry!
How To Make Caramelized Onion Twists
Ingredients
1 tbsp olive oil
1.5 large onions, sliced thin
Salt and pepper
1 cup shredded gruyere cheese
2 sheets store bought puff pastry
1 egg yolk
1 tsp water
0.5 tsp rosemary
1 tsp flaky sea salt
Instructions
1. Start by caramelizing your onions. Cut them as thin as possible and then heat olive oil over medium heat. Add your onions and season with salt and pepper. Let them cook for about 30 minutes, stirring regularly, until they are a nice caramel color. Set aside.
2. Preheat oven to 400˚F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
3. Lightly flour your surface and roll out the 2 sheets of puff pastry until they are roughly 15” x 10”.
4. Spread the onion mixture over one sheet of puff pastry, followed by the shredded gruyere cheese.
5. Gently place the other sheet of puff pastry over the top.
6. In a small bowl, whisk the egg yolk and water together. Brush that over the top of the puff pastry. Top with rosemary and flaky salt.
7. Using a pizza cutter, cut the sheets into 12 equal strips. Then cut lengthwise down the middle, so there are 24 pieces.
8. For each piece, hold both ends and gently twist, doing your best to keep the filling inside. Then place it on the baking sheet.
9. Bake for 20 minutes, or until puffed up and golden!

Let them cook for about 30 minutes, stirring regularly, until they are a nice caramel color. Set aside. The key to caramelizing onions is keeping an eye on it. Don't turn the heat on and walk away! I always start mine over medium heat, but if they are burning or browning unevenly, feel free to turn it down to low heat. Be sure to stir regularly and give them time to do their thing - there's no need to rush them!Caramelized Onion Twists
