Could you be PUNK?! Met Gala 2013
When I heard the theme for this years Met Gala, I got a little nervous. Punk is not something I am drawn to. I prefer sequins to safety pins! That being said, after hearing the attendees talk on the red carpet, I totally got on board. The theme Punk: From Chaos to Couture is so dynamic. A lot of people think that art or The Met don’t apply to them- it’s stuffy or they’ve never connected to it. But bringing Punk into the mix stirs up all sorts of personal memories and connections. All of a sudden, there is an exhibit at the Met that is relevant to a whole new audience.
We all know how this rebellious era influenced music and culture but how has it influenced fashion? And how do stars embrace it for a black tie event?! Creatively, that’s how. Obviously my personal best dressed list isn’t going to include Madonna and the real punks, but I’m sure no one will be surprised by that!
I did like this little lady who went all out with a MOWAWK! Leave it to Sarah Jessica Parker to pull out all the stops. She looks amazing in this Giles Deacon printed dress, thigh high Christian Louboutin boots, and Philip Treacy head piece. To me, this is committing to the theme while being appropriate for not only a black tie event, but a fashion event. Carrie Bradshaw would be proud.

I’m sure based on the amount of times I use the phrase “Treat Yo Self” you all have figured out that I am a huge Parks & Recreation fan. Well, Aubrey Plaza’s character, April, is kind of a punk. So it made me very happy to see her on the red carpet in a fierce cape dress by Marios Schwab with freaking awesome Barbara Bui heels!! Get it!!

I told you on Friday’s Links Lauren Loves that I love Kerry Washington. The obsession continues… She not only showed up in this floral Vera Wang gown, but she also showed up with Vera Wang herself! The gloves are not my favorite, but I love that she had fun with the theme. She even put purple streaks in her hair!

You can’t talk about the Met Ball without talking about Diane Kruger. The Jason Wu Dress she wore in 2011 is still one of my all time favorites. This Chanel dress could seem too ladylike for a Punk themed event, but it only makes me love the dip dyed pink hair even more. And I don’t know if you can see that spiky clutch, but it is so. cool.
Not everyone can pull off wearing a mini to a black tie event, but this embellished dress by Balmain is pretty rockin. Pair that with Kate Bosworth’s long legs and it’s a winning look.
Rooney Mara was the perfect choice to host the event. The theme and this Givenchy gown suited her perfectly. And that dark lip is killer.

Moving on to my Top Three!!
#3 Jessica Alba in Tory Burch
This is pretty much how I would interpret the theme. This laser cut leather (yes, leather!!) dress is both elegant and edgy. The cut outs add just the right amount of punk for her, because let’s be honest- if Jessica Alba showed up in a mohawk, we would all think she had gone crazy!
Also, I would like to wear this. Please.
Also, I would like to wear this. Please.
#2 Emma Watson in Prabal Gurung
She. looks. perfect. The hair, the makeup, the dress, the shoes. I literally have nothing bad to say about this look. The cut out and high low hem are a nod to the theme but also so extremely current. This is perfection.

#1 Sienna Miller in Burberry
Ah!! I have to give the #1 slot to Sienna Miller! Just LOOK at that jacket!! I think I might faint if I were ever in the same room as that studded Burberry beauty. The classic white underneath really draws all of the attention to the jacket. And the headpiece? Perfectly punk. I just loooove it.

And this post wouldn’t be complete without this picture.
Jennifer Lawrence and SJP. Enough said.
