Easy Christmas Trifle Recipe
My family makes this easy Christmas Trifle recipe every single year!
We made it to my last recipe of the year! Woooooo! I have to say, at the start of 2020, I felt very uninspired when it came to recipes. Our kitchen in our last apartment wasn’t very fun to cook in – think old and dark with no windows! While our kitchen now has a few quirks (and we’re hopefully updating it in the near future), it is still a DELIGHT to cook in. It’s been so fun to play around more and invite you to join me every Sunday for #LSLsupperclub. Can’t wait to cook together more in 2021!
That being said, this easy Christmas Trifle recipe requires ZERO cooking. Yeah, the “easy” part of this title really lives up to the name ? For me, this trifle is all about nostalgic flavors. My family has been making this every Christmas forever, so even just the smell of Harveys Bristol Cream takes me back to my Nana’s kitchen. The best.
Over the past few years, we’ve made a few simple updates. For example, Whole Foods sells vanilla pudding mixes with minimal ingredients that make us feel a bit better about not making pudding from scratch. And since my sister-in-law is lactose intolerant, we make that pudding mix with almond milk and top the trifle with a coconut whipped cream… which I think all of us like even better now.
The only ingredient that you can NOT mess with is the ladyfingers. Your grocery store might only sell crunchy ladyfingers, but you need to get soft ladyfingers. This is extremely important! My Mom and I can usually find them at Jewel, so if you’re in Chicago, I’d start there. If they don’t have them, I’d recommend calling your local grocery stores and asking the bakery department if they can set aside any soft ladyfingers for you. That way, you avoid running around from store to store. No one wants to do that during the holidays, let alone during a pandemic!
Easy Christmas Trifle Recipe
Ingredients
1 box of vanilla pudding
1 cup of raspberry jam
1/4 cup of Harveys Bristol Cream
32 soft ladyfingers
whipped cream
raspberries
Instructions
1. Make the pudding according to the instructions on the package. (You can also make homemade pudding if you’d like!) Set aside.
2. Pour Harveys Bristol Cream into a small bowl with a spoon. Get two additional spoons for the raspberry jam and vanilla pudding.
3. In either individual trifle dishes or one big trifle dish, start with a layer of ladyfingers. Lay them alongside each other in one layer, doing your best to reach all of the edges.
4. Sprinkle Harveys Bristol Cream over the ladyfingers. You want enough that they are moistened but not soaked in the sherry.
5. Spread an even layer of raspberry jam over the top, making sure to reach the edges so you can see the pretty layer through the glass.
6. Top that with an even layer of vanilla pudding.
7. Repeat that again one more time if you are serving in individual trifle dishes, or as many times as you can until your ingredients run out if you’re using one big trifle dish. Ladyfingers, Harveys, Jam, Pudding, repeat!
8. Finish the trifle (or each trifle) off with whipped cream and fresh raspberries.
9. Store in the refrigerator until it is time to eat.
How To Make This Easy Christmas Trifle Diary-Free
Luckily, 4 of the 6 ingredients in this recipe are naturally dairy-free, so that makes this easier! The only two things you need to alter are the vanilla pudding and the whipped cream. Most instant vanilla pudding brands include directions for almond milk or plant based milk either on the packaging or on their website. However, you could also find a dairy free recipe and make it from scratch, too!
As for the whipped cream, my family usually gets cocowhip, which is basically like a coconut milk based Cool Whip. For these photos, I tried out an almond milk whipped cream that tasted delicious – but I wouldn’t recommend it over the cocowhip. It lost it’s shape and sunk down pretty quickly after putting it on the trifle… which isn’t great for presentation purposes. If you are dairy free and allergic to coconuts, it will do the trick though!
