Homemade Magic Shell Recipe with Hudsonville Peppermint Stick Ice Cream
This post was sponsored by Hudsonville Ice Cream (aka our favorite ice cream!). Thank you for supporting the brands that make Lake Shore Lady possible!
When it comes to the holiday season, there’s nothing quite like the flavor of peppermint. Peppermint bark, peppermint mocha lattes, and of course, the Queen of them all: Peppermint Ice Cream.
I was so excited that a few of you messaged me that you also love Hudsonville’s Limited Edition Peppermint Stick Ice Cream when I posted a story last week, because it is truly the best peppermint ice cream I’ve ever had. It’s creamy and fresh, with just the right amount of candy cane pieces. Which makes it the perfect pairing for my homemade magic shell topping!
I’ve known about this easy recipe for a while and I’m surprised I haven’t shared it yet! I remember when my friend first told me about it and my mind was BLOWN. Two ingredients and a few minutes is all it takes?! WHAT?! But it’s true! It really is magic!
And just in case you have no idea what I’m talking about, this is based off of the magic shell ice cream topping I used to have as a kid. It’s basically a chocolate sauce that hardens up once it’s been on cold ice cream for a few seconds to create a chocolate shell. I have distinct memories of being DELIGHTED every time I cracked the shell on top of my scoop of ice cream. So satisfying.
More about Hudsonville Ice Cream
And just in case you’ve never heard of Hudsonville Ice Cream, you are in for a TREAT. It is a family owned Midwestern company that has been perfecting the art of ice cream making since 1926. Every flavor is creamy and delicious – and no one does indulgent pieces and swirls quite like them. While we get our Hudsonville Ice Cream at Jewel-Osco and Mariano’s, this Limited Edition flavor is only available at Jewel-Osco. If you see it, grab it because it won’t last long!!!! (You can also use their Scoop Locator to find a store near you!)
To celebrate the season, they also have a FREE holiday desserts ebook that includes recipes for a Tis the Season Skillet Cookie, Peppermint Brownie Ice Cream Bars, Diary Free Frozen Hot Chocolate, and a Frozen Yuletide Log Cake. Plus, you can download a special coupon to get $2 off ANY flavor! I told you they’re the best!
How To Make My Homemade Magic Shell Recipe
Ingredients
1/2 cup chocolate chips
2 tbsp coconut oil (measured solid – not liquid!)
Instructions
1) Put the chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave safe mason jar or bowl. (I like to make it in a mason jar because that makes it easy to store the extras sauce!)
2) Microwave for 20 seconds. Take it out and stir. Microwave for another 20 seconds. Stir again. Repeat this until all of the chocolate has melted and the mixture is super smooth.
3) Drizzle on top of Hudsonville ice cream and enjoy!
4) Store any extra sauce in an airtight container (a mason jar works great!) at room temperature.
Make a Peppermint Stick Ice Cream Sundae
Since I used this on top of Hudsonville’s Limited Edition Peppermint Stick Ice Cream, I also crushed up some candy canes to sprinkle on top. Not only does it add a little bit more holiday flavor – but it also looks a little bit like snow on top! I looooooove!

This looks SO good and easy! Bummer my husband is allergic to coconut, but I’ll just have to try it without him! Thanks for the ice cream brand recommendation – I love supporting Midwestern companies.
