Combating Indoor Air Pollutants with My New Air Purifier
We love our apartment. It’s so cozy and homey and classic Chicago… but it’s also old. When we first moved in, I kept waking up with a sore throat or stuffy nose and I could not figure out why. And then I learned about indoor air pollutants.
The quality of indoor air can actually be 2 to 5 times MORE polluted than outside air. In fact, the EPA ranked indoor air pollution among the top 5 environmental risks to public health. WHAT?!
Turns out, indoor air pollutants can be a variety of things like gas stoves that give off formaldehyde, building materials and furnishings, contaminated and/or inadequate ventilation systems, central heating/cooling systems, and more. It’s also possible for outdoor air pollution to enter your home when you open the door or a window. Nothing out of the ordinary at all. Plus, most of us (including me!) spend about 90% of our time indoors. Why isn’t this discussed more?!
After learning all of this, I quickly bought a refurbished air purifier for our bedroom. We use it every single night and I’m so convinced that it’s made a difference, I’ve been wanting to get a second one for the rest of the house. But this time, I wanted to be really intentional about which one I get.

3. It’s SO QUIET.
Honestly, I forget that I even turned it on, unless it detects pollutants in the room and increases to a super high setting. Otherwise, you can barely hear it – which is pretty amazing. Our other one almost feels like a white noise machine, but this one is SO quiet!
4. It has a Whisper mode and NightMode.
If you notice the sound more than I do, or your home requires a high setting most of the time, it also has a Whisper mode and NightMode. Whisper is great when you’re watching an important TV show (Game of Thrones finale anyone?), and NightMode is obviously great for when you’re going to sleep.
5. It’s so sleek.
Honestly, doesn’t it look so nice in our living room?! Plus, I love that it has touch buttons to easily change the settings, without worrying about Luna chewing off any bulky knobs ?
6. You can move it easily.

To be honest, even if you think I’m being paranoid about indoor air pollutants, there’s no denying that dust, pollen, and other allergens are in our air. Especially in old Chicago apartments.
