Monthly Fitness Recap: August 2017
Top: c/o Fabletics | Leggings: c/o Fabletics | Necklace: Vrai & Oro
Earlier in August, I decided that I wanted to start tracking my workouts. Not for any crazy reason – I just thought it would be an interesting experiment! I shared a little bit of my makeshift “planner” on insta-stories and so many of you asked what I was using, if I would share how I did at the end of the month, how I like to hold myself accountable, etc. Turns out that’s the push I needed to finally turn this into a monthly series!
Each month, I will recap all of my workouts from the previous month. My goals, my struggles, my favorite workouts, all of it! Right now, I’m also releasing a calendar for the next month (get September here), so you guys can track/plan along with me! (And yes, I’ll be better about posting these earlier each time, I promise ?)
What else do you want to see?!
Do you like the idea of getting a new workout planner each month? Or would you rather I put together a 6 month or 12 month download for you guys to print out? I’d love your feedback – I really want this to become a monthly motivator for all of us! Maybe I could start presenting challenges each month, too? I’d love ALL your ideas!
But first, let’s get to it:
August Goals:
Try BBG. Try Orangetheory. Start tracking workouts. Complete 4 workouts a week.
August Obstacles:
There was a lot of weekend travel, which meant I had a lot of catching up to do during the week. Sometimes there just weren’t enough hours in the day!
# of workouts planned: 16
# of workouts completed: 16
(not always 4 a week, but I made up for it!)
BBG:
This workout has become extremely popular in the Instagram community, but it took my friend Caroline telling me about it to really get me interested. The workouts are really great, some are VERY difficult, and it’s all around an awesome way to get fit. That being said… I mostly work from home, so it’s really tough for me to motivate myself to work out in the same space! I’ve also realized that one of the reasons why I love fitness is because it gets me OUT of my apartment! For 45-60 glorious minutes, my computer is far away, my phone is in a locker, and a teacher is pushing me to work harder. Losing that aspect makes me far less interested ? I’ll definitely hold onto these workouts for hotel/travel situations or really busy days, though!
Flybarre and Arms & Abs:
I quickly became addicted to these classes and there’s no end in sight. They are usually a quick 45 minutes and I love that I don’t get too sweaty so I can continue on with my day right after. There’s also fun music, you get a good burn, and there are awesome teachers. Elena is my fave and you can get your first class free with the code FLYLAKESHORELA if you want to test it out!
CorePower Yoga:
I will always and forever love yoga (especially CorePower Yoga!) but there are a few reasons why I’m going a little less now than I have in the past. First of all, I went nearly every day when I was in teacher training and I think that mentally burned me out a little. I also think my body was craving a different form of movement. Someone once told me that you need to trick your body if you want to see change – and my bod had just gotten SO used to all those yoga poses! Switching things up and incorporating different workouts has helped me grow in my practice too, so I think I’m on the right path! In addition, there’s a big shift in teachers at my studio and I’ve been having trouble finding new favorites. BUT I’m not worried because I always come back to yoga. Plus, one of the girls from my teacher training (Ashley Fl on the schedule!) is teaching C1 and C2 there now and she’s AWESOME. Her assists are the best – I promise you’ll love her!
OrangeTheory:
One of the studio managers at Orangetheory reached out to me asking if I wanted to try a class last month, and honestly, I initially went for research purposes. A lot of people ask me about fitness studios in the city and I wanted to be able to share my opinion about this one! Turns out, I loved it. I mean, I hated it and I loved it. I’m not a runner – I’m slow, I have short legs, I don’t enjoy it, and I WILL NOT do it on my own. (Hey, I know myself!) But this class has someone telling me I can do it AND I don’t have to stay on the treadmill for more than 20 minutes in most classes. There’s also killer weights and rowing involved which makes it the hardest workout on this list for sure. I doubt this will ever be my one and only studio, but I love the idea of incorporating into my schedule a few times a week. There’s also a huge sense of accomplishment every time I leave the studio, which is pretty great. Not gonna lie ?
Flywheel:
To be honest, I’ve realized I like Flywheel best with a buddy. If Kit wants to go with me, I’m in. But if I’m going by myself, there’s a chance I’ll end up going to barre or another workout instead. I don’t know why – I always have a great time when I go! So, does anyone want to help me get on that bike more often?! Let me know!
Busy/Rest:
Okay, these aren’t workouts, but I included them on my calendar for a reason. Sometimes, between my job and LSL, I’m literally working from the moment I get up to the moment I go to bed. Sometimes, I have evening plans – both blog related or personal. Things pop up and get in the way all the time, because that’s life! But I’d like to also note the times when I just need to rest. Going to bed early or pressing snooze in the morning can be huge for my general well being – yes, just as much as a workout. I think it’s important to honor that sometimes. No, it shouldn’t be an excuse all the time, but sometimes it’s totally valid!

Have you ever done a post about what is in your gym bag? I have been going to Core Powrr for a couple months now, and I would like a new mat and I need something to carry my mat, towel, etc. I’d love to see your recommendations!

I love this idea of tracking my workouts on a calendar each month! I think its a great way to keep track of class times and locations and will help me keep myself accountable for going to classes! Thank you for sharing your calendar with us! I like the idea of getting a few months at a time so I can set my fitness goals and start planning my classes for the next month early.
