The Little Things: How both the good and the bad ones can affect your day
Hey pals! I had every intention of making this a quick light post about my Nic & Zoe maxi dress (you guys know how I love those – evidence here, here, and here), but I’ve kind of been in a funk today (Tuesday). And not for any good reason, either. I pressed snooze more than I should have this morning. I realized how far away Flywheel is from my new apartment. I’m frustrated with a pimple on my face because I have to be on TV this morning (WCIU at 7:40am!). I had a few annoying emails come through. My lovely time of the month is approaching (TMI, but whatever, we’re friends). I had agreed to cook dinner for Adam and his Dad, and part of me wanted to back out. Nothing crazy, just little things.
Now, guys. Let me be clear. NONE OF THESE ARE PROBLEMS.
And I’m not sharing them with you to make them seem like real problems (because they’re not)… I’m sharing them with you so you might recognize the little things in your life that annoy you/throw off your day. I am positive that I am not the only one who feels off sometimes because of tiny minuscule things that add up until you don’t even know why you’re in a bad mood. Am I right?
But halfway through the afternoon, I got a text that one of my friends had a health scare. And let me tell ya – few things bring you back down to earth more than that. She’s going to be fine (phew!), but it definitely made me pause and bring a little bit more self-awareness and gratitude into my day.
Moral of the story: it’s not going to be sunshine and rainbows every single day. And that’s okay! Sometimes we’re just not feeling that! But there’s a difference between letting the little things that bother you add up, versus noticing your reactions to those little things, and then finding some good ones to balance it out.
The group text with my friends. The fact that my body got me through a hard spin class. My supportive boyfriend telling me he doesn’t even notice my pimple. Our awesome new apartment. New collaborations. A great Taco Tuesday spread.
I think we can agree that those good little things totally outweigh the bad little things. So, take a moment to notice all of those little things today. Even if it’s just the fact that you saw the cutest maxi dress that comes in petite sizing on Lake Shore Lady today…
(Did you like that segue? ?)
Maxi Dress: c/o Nic & Zoe (comes in regular and PETITE sizing) | Necklace: Vrai & Oro | Clutch: J.Crew (old, but love this one and this one) | Belt: Nordstrom| Flip Flops: J.Crew
Okay, but really – this dress has been a major MVP of my summer so far. I actually got it for a Nic & Zoe event I co-hosted, but I didn’t think I realized how much I was going to love it then. First of all, the length is perfect. I stepped right into it and can wear nice sandals or FLIP FLOPS and not ruin the bottom. Hallelujah! Second of all, the fabric alone makes you feel breezy, let alone the style. It’s light and airy and literally perfect for a hot summer day.
I add a belt when I wear it, which you certainly don’t have to do. I just like to define my waist a little bit – otherwise I feel like a big blob in these kinds of dresses ?Since I’m not tall with long limbs, defining my waist is usually a must for me. Luckily, this dress looks good both ways!
