Petite Winter Coats for Women (That work for taller gals, too!)
Check out my favorite petite winter coats for women looking to stay warm whether it’s 50 degrees or -5!
Hello from chilly Chicago! It’s no secret that it gets cold here, so obviously winter coats are a necessity. But Chicago winters also cover a WIDE range of temperatures. I mean, in January alone, we could see 45 degrees or -5 degrees! Since I’ve been living through cold winters my whole life, I’ve learned that it’s okay for me to invest in different coats to get me through the varying severity that this season brings.
So today I’m talking through petite winter coats for women – but don’t close this tab if you’re taller than me! (I’m 5’2″!) You can always toggle over to the regular or tall sizing options for all of these. These suggestions aren’t only for my fellow short gals!
And lastly, before we dive in – I wore the same sweater and jeans with each look. Both run true to size and are great sustainable basics to have in your closet. I wear a small in the sweater and a 26 in the jeans. If your size is sold out, this pair is a great straight leg option. And now let’s get to the winter coats!
Petite Winter Coats for Women
My favorite coat for 40-50 degrees
Abercrombie Wool-Blend Dad Coat (wearing size petite small) | Cashmere Crew Sweater (wearing size small) | Skinny Jeans (wearing size ankle 26) | The Glove Boot (run true to size)
I have been wanting a chic camel coat for a while now and this one won me over with it’s petite sizing. I got a petite small and it fits perfectly – and there’s room for sweaters underneath, too! It’s not the warmest coat ever, but I didn’t really expect it to be. I’ll wear it on mild winter days, or on fancy nights out when I’m going directly from a car to a restaurant or show. It retails for $220 but it’s 20% off right now, bringing the total down to $176. Totally worth it.
Also, if you’re looking for the most comfortable booties on the planet, THESE ARE IT. I’ve had them for a few years now and they are my absolute favorite. They feel like you’re wearing socks – but with a boost. They’re the best.

My favorite coat for 30-40 degrees
J.Crew Quilted Cocoon Puffer (wearing size petite small)| Cashmere Crew Sweater | Skinny Jeans | Allbirds Mizzles (if you’re between sizes, size up)
As many of you know, I treated myself to this cocoon puffer coat for my trip to Finland – and I’m SO glad I did. Usually puffers are so big and bulky, but this one is so nice and light. It’s surprisingly warm though, especially when you layer a warm sweater underneath. I’d definitely reach for a warmer coat once it gets down into the 20’s or below though.
Also, have you heard me rave about these sustainable sneakers yet? I own a few pairs of Allbirds, but the mizzles are my favorite in the winter. This style is made of ZQ merino wool with water-repellent Puddle Guard® technology and traction on the bottoms. And they’re machine washable! The perfect winter sneaker.

My favorite coat for 20-30 degrees
J.Crew Parka – this year’s version! (wearing petite 2) | Cashmere Rib Beanie | Sunglasses – similar linked | Cashmere Crew Sweater | Skinny Jeans | Over The Knee Boots – similar linked
I got this wool coat last year, but this year’s version looks just as good!! It comes in 4 colors and in clasic, petite, and tall sizing. I got a petite 2 and it’s a little oversized, which I love for layering. I also love the contrasting trim and removable faux fur hood. The stadium-cloth wool material is really warm (without being too bulky) and it also has quilted lining inside for extra warmth. Biiiiig fan of this one.

My favorite coat for 10-20 degrees
J.Crew Chateau Puffer (wearing petite small)| Faux Fur Snood (similar linked) | Cashmere Crew Sweater | Skinny Jeans | Vince Camuto Boots (similar linked)
As you can see, my color block situation isn’t available anymore (I got it 2 years ago) but this one is the same style in solid. This updated style is a little bulkier than my first J.Crew puffer that I got probably 6 years ago now (that I still own and wear regularly!) – but it’s also SUPER warm. It also has a drawstring waist to help you feel a little less like a marshmallow, and the sherpa-lined removable hood is a nice touch too! I got a petite small and it fits great, even with bulky sweaters.

My favorite coat for 10 degrees and below
Lole Katie Jacket – also on sale here! (wearing size XS) | Pom Beanie (similar linked) | Fair Isle Scarf (this scarf is SO SOFT and on sale!) | Cashmere Crew Sweater | Skinny Jeans | Nordic Boots (if between sizes, size up)
If you are always cold or just simply in the market for the warmest possible coat for polar vortex temps, I got an older version this down parka a few years ago and it is definitely the warmest coat I’ve ever owned. I even wrote a whole blog post about it! The biggest selling point is that it has 550 fill power and the insulation will protect against temperatures as low as -4 degrees. Of course it’s not cheap at full price, but it’s still way less than their competitors like Canada Goose.
Also, my cozy nordic boots are a bestseller of mine every year. I am usually a size 6.5 in shoes and I sized up to a 7 in these. I’ve had these for a few years now and the faux shearling lining is still so soft and warm!
