Scroll down for my sleepy girl mocktail recipe!
I don’t know about you, but sleep doesn’t always come easily for me. In fact, that’s one of the main reasons I bought myself an Oura Ring last year! I’ve learned a lot through tracking my sleep, mostly about the different habits that help or hurt my ability to have a really restful night.
And yet, just like everyone else, I still have some nights when my brain just won’t shut off. I’ve tried melatonin, CBD, THC, meditation and they’ve all worked to varying degree. That being said, whether it’s the cost or the ingredients or the way they make me feel the next day, I don’t love the idea of sticking with any of them every single night.
But then I saw the viral Sleepy Girl Mocktail on TikTok and I was immediately intrigued. It’s simple to make, super affordable to keep up with, delicious to drink, and it can help me sleep? *runs to grocery store*
What is the Sleepy Girl Mocktail?
The Sleepy Girl Mocktail is a viral recipe that’s been gaining attention on social media. It only requires a few simple ingredients and is extremely easy to recreate.
Sleepy Girl Mocktail Ingredients
Tart Cherry Juice
Not only does Tart Cherry Juice have a lot of antioxidants, but it also has melatonin in it! If you’ve never heard of melatonin, it is a hormone that helps regulate sleep-wake cycles. It also contains tryptophan, which is an amino acid that can boost your production of melatonin. In other words, this acts as an alternative to that melatonin gummy… without any grogginess to worry about.
I’ve been using The Power Of Seven Purple Organic Juice Blend that I found at Trader Joe’s and it is delicious. In addition to tart cherry juice, it also has pomegranate, black mulberry, red grape, purple carrot, cranberry and blueberry juice. It might not be as full of melatonin as straight tart cherry juice, but it tastes so good – and I’ve still noticed the benefits of this mocktail with it!
Did you know that over 50% of Americans have a magnesium deficiency? How crazy is that?! This is really the only tricky ingredient – and it’s only tricky because there are different types of magnesium out there. Some forms will relax your muscles and help regulate your cortisol levels while others can… make you go to the bathroom.
I use Magnesi-om by Moon Juice and I like it a lot. It’s different from a lot of other magnesium supplements out there because it contains 3 bioavailable forms of magnesium. It has that Magnesium Citrate that supports regular bowel movements, but it also has Chelated Magnesium Gluconate and Acetyl Taurinate to support muscle relaxation and cognitive function.
It also has L-Theanine in it! If you’ve ever taken any other sleep supplements, you might recognize this ingredient. L-Theanine is an amino acid that promotes alpha-wave activity in the brain. This can help us feel calmer, less stressed, and ready for sleep at night.
I actually just started adding unflavored L-Theanine to my morning coffee and it’s helped me avoid the jitters and crash that sometimes comes with caffeiene for me. It’s been a total game changer!
It’s also worth mentioning that Moon Juice’s Magnesi-om supplement is delicious. I have the berry flavor and it works perfecting with this sleepy girl mocktail.
Once your juice and magnesium are mixed, all that’s left to do is top it off with ice and sparkling water! I’ve seen some people use Poppi or Olipop soda, but I think it’s better to keep it simple. You can use any flavor or brand of sparkling water that you like!
Elderberry Syrup (optional)
This is totally optional, but since it’s the middle of winter and lots of people are getting sick, I decided to add some elderberry syrup one night. I figured it would help me get a little immune support, but the flavor also works SO well with the other ingredients.
I use Organic Olivia’s Elderberry Immune Elixir which has 6400mg of fresh elderberries in each serving and no added sugar. Elderberries are packed with antioxidants and vitamins that can help boost your immune system.
They’ve also been shown to help with inflammation and stress, as well as prevent and lessen cold and flu symptoms. While this isn’t a common ingredient in the sleep girl mocktail, I feel like it’s a perfect addition!
Sleepy Girl Mocktail Recipe
- In a glass, combine the tart cherry juice and magnesium powder. Stir well to ensure the magnesium is evenly distributed.
- If you are adding elderberry syrup, stir that in now.
- Add ice cubes to the glass, filling it about halfway.
- Pour the sparkling water over the ice and cherry-magnesium mixture.
- Gently stir the mocktail, mixing the ingredients without losing the effervescence of the sparkling water.
