Warby Parker x DonorsChoose.org (+Mindy Kaling!)
I’m a big fan of Warby Parker and a proud owner of their Clyde frames, so when I got an email from them, with Lake Shore Lady in the subject line, I pretty much squealed with delight. Then, when I found out they wanted me to help spread the word about a new collaboration for a great cause and it’s supported by (my favorite) Mindy Kaling… well… I was beyond happy to oblige.
Here’s what they’re up to this time.
DonorsChoose.org was founded by it’s CEO, Charles Best, who also happens to be a former teacher. While teaching, he noticed how often he and other teachers were struggling to fund classroom projects without anywhere to turn for help. So, here’s what they can do now. School teachers across the country crowd source materials and experiences for the classrooms by posting online. In turn, DonorsChoose.org vets the project and anyone can donate to it. Once the classroom request has been fulfilled, DonorsChoose.org purchases and ships the materials to the school. The coolest part? The teachers update their project backers with dispatchers from the classrooms.
Now you’re wondering how Mindy Kaling is involved, right? Well, she’s a Warby Parker fan, and she donates to DonorsChoose.org. That’s right- now we can add charitable to the list of reasons why she’s the coolest.
She discovered them when she wanted to donate to a charity for her birthday. So naturally, she got on Twitter to to ask her many followers for suggestions. This one caught her eye because:
“You’re making an impact directly to a small group of people and really tangibly and quickly changing their lives. You don’t have the feeling like ‘Oh I want to help, but there’s so much bureaucratic stuff between me and actually helping.'”
With every $95 frame purchased from this collaboration, Warby Parker is donating $30, so that each customer can contribute to the DonorsChoose.org project of his or her choice. So, not only are part of the proceeds going to a good cause, but you can also choose exactly which project you want to help. And, as always, for every pair of glasses sold, a pair is distributed to someone in need.
To recap: you get super awesome sunglasses, someone else gets a much needed pair of glasses, and you get to make an impact in a classroom.
That’s a whole lotta good.
The frames are called the GARDNER.
They’re a larger version of the Winston frame, a best seller.
“The angular edges, timeless shape, and schoolbus yellow detail flatter every kind of scholar.”

Thanks for spotlighting this. I run a DonorsChoose giving page. Right now there are 38 wonderful classrooms that need help. (None are my own.) http://www.donorschoose.org/K-Rocks
