What To Wear For Family Photos
November is in full swing which means that we all need to start thinking about ordering holiday cards – but what if you don’t have a photo for it yet?! Don’t worry, there’s still time to pull a cute outfit together, schedule a mini shoot with a photographer or even just coax a friend or family member to snap a shot for you! But what should you WEAR for family photos?! Well, friend, that’s why I wrote this post!
But before we dive in to that, where should you order your holiday cards from? We got ours from Minted and they turned out SO CUTE. I really love that Minted has so many unique designs to choose from – no matter what vibe you’re going for or what colors you’re wearing in the photos, you can find something that fits perfectly. Plus, they offer free custom envelopes and recipient addressing! YES PLEASE! Some sponsored stories are coming early next week, but if you want to order your cards before then, use code LADYCARDS22 for 20% off + free expedited shipping on your order!
Now, let’s chat photos:
First, pick a location!
Before you pick out what to wear, figure out where you will be taking it! Will it be a quick snap in your home or are you doing a whole shoot with a photographer? Will you be outside or inside? This will help you decide if you need coats, what type of outfits make sense, and more.
Sync with others on a color palette.
Before you pick out what to wear, ask your family what they are wearing and determine if a color palette is necessary. It’s pretty simple for us since it’s just Adam and I – but this step is way more important if you have multiple kids or if you’re doing a whole big family photo with your parents, siblings, etc. Also, if you have your heart set on a Minted card with lots of reds or greens, think about how you want your photo to look within that design!
Find something you feel great in!
I’m a sucker for dresses, but I also know that not everyone feels their best in a dress – so think about what makes you feel the most confident and beautiful!

Outfit Suggestions for Family Photos
Sweater Dresses to Wear for Family Photos
When I think about what to wear for family photos in the fall, I immediately think about sweater dresses. In my opinion, they are the perfect thing to wear when you want to look polished but still feel warm and cozy. I personally own and love this one, but I also swooned over this one when I tried it on in store. It would be SO cute for a baby announcement too since it has stretch in it! If those are out of budget, there are a bunch of other price points included in the collage above too!
Other Dresses
I know I titled this collage Thanksgiving Dresses – but they work really well for family photos too! I love the idea of a festive plaid dress or green wrap dress, especially if everyone else is able to wear reds, navy and/or cream. This maxi is also SO pretty if you want to add a little glam to the shoot.
Sweaters
If you’re not a fan of dresses, you can’t go wrong with a cozy sweater. I personally love Sezane sweaters like this one and this one. They both feel a little more elevated and feminine than your average everyday sweater. Or if you’re looking for something more affordable, this one comes in a bunch of colors and is 40% off right now!
Blouses
If you live somewhere warm or just prefer blouses to sweaters, here are some particularly pretty options to choose from! I looove this one – the sleeves are so pretty!
